SAG red carpet

I missed the red carpet because I went into work Sunday evening. Based on the word of the Twitterverse, I think I’ll count myself lucky to have missed the E! broadcast; it was not well received. Of course, I reviewed the gowns upon my return home. And, because of expected icy road conditions (that didn’t actually occur) I don’t have to get into work until noon, so I have time to post my much sought after (ha!) thoughts on last night’s fashion.

Best

SAG Best 2013

In no particular order: Marion Cotillard, Jennifer Garner, Anne Hathaway (exquisite from head to toe), Jessica Chastain, and Jaimie Alexander (I didn’t even know who this was but when I saw her my only thought was, “Hot.”).

Worst

SAG Worst 2013

January Jones (a wreck from head to toe), Mayim Bialik (of course), Morena Baccarin (it was worse than this picture shows), Ariel Winter (mother of the bride, and not even good MIB).

Inaugural ball prep

Issa Spice Twist DressThis January, the husband and I are attending one of the “State Society” inaugural balls with several of our new friends. An inaugural ball is definitely something that is on my must-do-while-living-in-DC list. I’ve already scheduled my hair appointment at Dry Bar. But what to wear? I wasn’t about to buy a dress. Enter Rent the Runway. I’ve heard a lot about this service but have never had the need to try it out. Until now. The dress I initially wanted was unavailable in my size for the date I required it. Drat! I spent a lot of effort picking that one out. The long sleeves were perfect for a January event and I dug the plunging neckline. In hindsight though, this dress would have required some major pre-event prep on my part – a serious diet and actually going to the gym… a lot, not to mention two pairs of Spanks.

Badgley Mischka RTR dressSo back to the drawing board I went. And I ended up choosing this red, strapless Badgley Mischka. Red is not a color I usually wear. And strapless isn’t always the most flattering look for me (although my wedding dress was strapless). The fit is much more forgiving than that of the Issa dress, which I appreciate given that I can’t seem to ever make it to the gym and it is the season of peppermint bark and Christmas cookies. The necklace shown is no longer available for rent (foiled again!), but I’ve become obsessed with the idea of wearing a statement necklace of (faux) diamonds and jade/emerald/malachite/whatever-green-stones.

Pre-ball to-do list: Find perfect necklace, hire babysitter, secure transportation, tone up my not-ready-for-primetime arms. That’s doable, right?

Blog love

I stumbled across a new blog, seersucker + saddles. LOVE. I wish I could rock her hairdo, but my wimpy, fine hair couldn’t pull it off. It does make me miss my short hair though. Here are just a few of my favorite looks.

* I’ve been unmotivated to post on the blog as of late. I am, however, pleased to report that I’m under 150 lbs. again, at 149.2 as of last Friday.

No ifs, ands or buts

I’m sticking to my guns regarding not buying (or keeping) clothing items that have a “but.” I really like this but… Last week I ordered this pleat front blouse with a red, burgundy and cream pattern from Banana Republic. (Currently out of stock online.) I loved the fit.

Cute, right? But upon closer inspection… the pattern is kind of weird. My husband remarked on it and the first thing that popped out of my mouth was, “Yeah, it looks like teeth yanked out with the bloody root still attached.” Um, what? So of course that is all I can see now. Don’t you see it?

Yep, this blouse has to be returned.

Sarah Chloe

Shame on me for not thanking the gals over at Sarah Chloe jewelry. I’d been searching for a while for a necklace that would symbolize the baby. Do you know that the linden leaf is not a terribly popular flora for jewelry reproduction? Damn. I finally decided just to go with her name. But I didn’t want it to be so obvious. I found a charm/font I liked at Sarah Chloe, but the name was horizontal, with the chain attached at the “L” and “N.” I emailed to ask if they could instead hang it vertically, just from the “N.” “No problem!” they said. I was hoping that it would be less obvious, and look more like a squiggly pattern of sorts. I’m tres happy with it. I do want a longer chain though. It came with a 16″ chain. I really like the chain (not too shiny or a weird pattern) and am happy to report that I can buy an 18″ one directly from Sarah Chloe, which I’ll do soon. Thanks for the extra personalization, gals!

Only the “loves”

Sometimes I have a hard time saying “no” to an item of clothing I’ve tried on if I mostly like it and it fits. I fall into the trap of, “Well, it’s a good fit and it would work in my wardrobe…” Bad, Sharyn! While that may be technically true, it shouldn’t fit in my wardrobe if I don’t love it. Example: I ordered a ton of stuff from Banana Republic (and I’ve already returned 6 of the 9 things for various reasons; I love shopping from home) and initially planned to keep three (the third item being a black blazer, which I surprisingly do not already own). When I put on this cream blouse I thought, “Oh, I like the sleeve and it fits pretty well. It can’t hurt to have a cream-colored blouse for work or dressy-casual. Weird, the keyhole kind of makes it look like it’s on backward. <shrug>” When I put on the navy blouse, my reaction was, “Oh, hell yeah.” The lesson I should take away: return that damn cream blouse! My budget isn’t so expansive that I can keep the “mehs” and my closet ain’t so big either; and I don’t want to clutter it up with <shrugs>. This is the correct attitude, right?

L: BR Pleat-shoulder blouse, $69.50; R: BR Print silk-tie blouse, sale $59.99 (+ online code THANKYOU for 30-35% off purchase, ends 10/2).

Emmy red carpet recap

I was just going to include a few dresses that caught my eye, but then the “worst” dresses just kept piling up, it was too irresistible!

My favorites of the night…

I usually don’t enjoy the unusual dresses, but I was digging January Jones tonight. Jessica Paré looking classically beautiful. Kerry Washington looked great, although this pink, sparkly gown looked better on TV than in the still photo here. Gretchen Mol, liking the simplicity and all-red ensemble. And the adorable Sarah Hyland. I am sure I overlooked a few as I missed most of the red carpet broadcast this evening.

And the parade of horribles…

Oh my god, the ugly just would not end. Lena Dunham – frumpy much? (I had to Google her because I didn’t know who she was. And she’s cute. This ensemble is doing her no favors.) Kristen Wiig – a good looking & funny gal, but always dressed so wretchedly. Ashley Judd – bad Southern prom. Zosia Mamet (who?) – just ick. Hayden Panettiere – this dress is trying too hard. Mayim Bialik – why are you dressing like you are sixty seven (no offense to the always lovely Helen Mirren)? Last and worst is… Elisabeth Moss – there are not words.

I hate sunnies

No, I don’t harbor an irrational abhorrence of sunglasses. I hate the term sunnies. It’s like nails on a chalkboard for me. I have been known to refer to skinny jeans as skinnies, which isn’t all that different, but for some reason that doesn’t bother me. Maybe it’s because one of the bloggers that I follow, who is super annoying, uses the term sunnies all of the time so I associate it with her. (Although she bugs the crap out of me, she posts some absolutely fantastic outfits, which is why I continue to follow her.)

NYFW

For those who don’t know, that’s New York Fashion Week. I don’t follow it at all but several of the bloggers I do follow have been posting on the fashion shows. That’s where I saw this black & white striped Oscar de la Renta gown. YES, PLEASE! If you know me, you know (or can figure out from my wardrobe) that I love stripes. This gown is perfection. This is, of course, purely fantasy; I have zip, zero, zilch reasons for having a gown. But it’s still dreamy.

Decision time

I was still conflicted about the Coach purse situation when I went to the store to return the black purse. (I got a 25% off coupon through Gilt so I wasn’t going to miss out on that.) According to the Coach website, the colorblock purse wasn’t at the Pentagon City mall, but there it was. I was instantly less excited about it; it was so much better in the picture. So, that made my decision pretty easy. But there was still a choice to be made – silver or brass hardware on the black purse. I had originally purchased the silver. But when I went to to buy it (again) during a subsequent mall trip (this time, Tysons Corner), I opted for brass and I’m glad I did. Love it.

P.S. That Gilt coupon saved me $119. Sweet!
